Facts about
Philomath
Incorporated in 1882, the City of Philomath is located in Benton County, at an elevation
of 280 feet above sea level, where the Mary's River leaves the coast range.
The town was developed around the Philomath
College. The main building has been renovated and now houses the Benton County Historical
Museum on Main Street near the center of town. The name Philomath is derived from two
Greek words and means "lover of learning."
Philomath is located approximately five miles
west of Corvallis and Oregon State University, the State's Land Grant, Sea Grant, and
Space Grant University. Residents describe their town as a caring, hardworking
community with traditional and conservative values which lend to a very independent
spirit.
The economic base of Philomath is primarily
related to the lumber industry, however there is an emerging entrepreneur community which
includes software designers, internet specialists, consultants, artists and antique
dealers.
Historically, the confluence of transportation
routes and the availability of water power helped establish Philomath as an early
lumbermill center. The area southeast of the City of Philomath is predominantly
agriculture with rye grass being the principal crop.
The quiet rural setting and temperate climate
allows residents to take advantage of abundant outdoor recreation opportunities resulting
from the city's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal and Cascade Mountain
Ranges. Philomath has 3 parks, and school facilities available for swimming, tennis,
softball, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer,
track and cross country. The area has more than 60 miles of bike and jogging paths that
connect with Philomath. More than 50 parks and preserves are in the area. There are ample
opportunities for freshwater fishing in the surrounding rivers, as well as,
backpacking, mountaineering, canoeing, camping, skiing and bike touring.
The Rodeo Grounds in Philomath is the site of
the well known annual Philomath Frolic and Rodeo, a fun time
held the second weekend in July each year. The weekend activities include 3 rodeos
sanctioned by the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association, a parade, carnival, craft
booths and concession booths, dances and many other activities.
The Philomath Area Chamber of Commerce presents
a classic car show, the Mary's River Rod Run the third
weekend in June. Vehicles come from around the northwest for all to enjoy.
Philomath is also the home of the Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire, a wonderful, interactive reenactment
of a 16th century Elizabethan Welsh Village. The Faire is held the second weekend in
September. |
